Spotlight on Cabrini Green Legal Aid

The comprehensive work that Cabrini Green Legal Aid (CGLA) provides its legal clients goes far beyond handling individual legal matters. CGLA also partners with workforce development programs and has in-house social workers to help clients achieve “whole life transformation.” CGLA is a critical resource to people facing negative consequences stemming from contact with the criminal justice system.

In 2014, the Foundation granted CGLA enhanced capacity funding to facilitate its proactive acquisition of Chicago Legal Advocacy for Incarcerated Mothers (CLAIM). Mission + Strategy Consulting, experts on strategic restructuring and mergers, helped CGLA and CLAIM consolidate operations, which extended CGLA’s programs to serve incarcerated women and their children and increased its ability to support people leaving jail and prison. Equally important, the acquisition preserved CLAIM’s essential legal services for incarcerated mothers and also gave the women access to CGLA’s holistic support services and partner programs to meet their families’ broader range of needs.

After proactively acquiring a smaller organization that provided specialized services, CGLA now offers a broader, more comprehensive base of services that fosters real and lasting change for more clients.

About Polk Bros. Foundation

Polk Bros. Foundation is a private independent foundation which focuses its work at the intersection of Chicago's most pressing issues to address the complex roots and devastating effects of poverty, challenge inequity, and ensure that all Chicagoans have the opportunity to reach their full potential. Since its founding in 1988, the Foundation has partnered with more than 3,900 Chicago nonprofits to build strong communities and families, increase access to quality education and the arts, improve health, and strengthen organizations and the sectors in which they work. In fall 2024, Polk Bros. Foundation announced three new goals that will guide our work in the years to come: Closing the Life Expectancy Gap; Building Community Wealth Across Generations; and Fostering a Participatory, Multiracial Democracy. The Foundation will share full strategies in support of its new goals and begin fully grantmaking toward these goals in fall 2026.
